Grading and Absent Work Policies

Below are some of the grading policy guidelines for 8th grade science, as well as some helpful tips on how to stay up to date on grades in my class:

GRADING BREAKDOWN:

  • 30% of overall grade comes from major grades (tests/projects)
  • 70% of overall grade comes from minor grades (daily assignments/quizzes)

LATE WORK POLICY:

  • If work is turned after the due date, the maximum students are able to earn is a 70%

  • Students have a one week window in which to turn in late work. After one week (5 school days) have passed, I will no longer accept late work.

MAKEUP ASSIGNMENTS AND TESTS:

If you receive a grade that is below a 70%, you must correct and justify each answer that was originally deemed incorrect for the maximum makeup grade of a 70%. (Applies to both minor and major grade assignments). After one week (5 school days) have passed, I will no longer accept makeup grades.

TIPS:

Please be sure to regularly check Remind texts, updates to the 8th grade science websites, Google Classroom, and Canvas to find assignments that you are either missing or have a grade that is below a 70. The assignments are, more often than not, titled the exact same and are accompanied by explicit instructions for how to complete them.

If you are turning in an assignment after the due date for any reasons please make sure to send Mr. Gibson an email with the subject line matching the name of the assignment exactly as it appears in the Skyward gradebook. This is required in an effort to ensure that both the student and the teacher maintain a record that each assignment is turned in within the five day window during which late, makeup, and absent work may be accepted. Since all of the posted assignments have already been graded, I will be unable to actively check them to see if you have finished them, so informing me via email that you have done so will ensure that your work gets graded.

Make sure to check your digital classroom resources regularly for new assignments and updates, and feel free to contact me anytime with questions that you may have.

ABSENT WORK POLICY:

In the event that you are absent, they are afforded the same number of days that they were absent to complete the assignments that they missed once they return. For example, if you miss three days of school, you will be given three days after returning to complete whatever assignments you missed.

It is likely that whatever assignment you missed while absent has already been graded.

Please note that after the afforded number of days to complete absent work, any assignments not turned in will be considered late, after which the late work policies highlighted above will go into affect.
